Notes: Was one of ten finalists for the Year's Best Short-Short Story Contest, 1990. Written during early fall, 1990, in Baltimore.
She counts like this: one, a couple, several, a few, a handful, some, a lot, hundreds, millions, quadrillions. She looks out the window at the trees on the hillside. There's a lot. The sunlight makes their bare branches gray and white. The sky is blue; the ground is brownish-orange mixed with green. At the foot of the hill there is a gully. She cannot see it, only the line which means it is there.
